Activo offers two types of cabling, copper (unshielded twisted pair (UTP) and shielded twisted pair (STP)) and fibre.

Copper cabling is a less expensive, but slower option. Fibre cabling comes with a higher price tag but is more reliable over long distances and delivers faster speeds.

It is often beneficial to deploy a cabling infrastructure that uses a combination of copper and fibre, making it capable of supporting Ethernet or other protocols as required. In making your decision, be sure to consider all current requirements as well as future needs.

UTP cables do not have any metallic shielding around the copper wires. They are smaller, cheaper, and easier to install than STP cables. They are more vulnerable to noise interference, however, which makes them ideal for domestic and Ethernet connections. They are available up to category 6 with maximum data speeds of 1000Mbps and maximum bandwidth up to 250MHz.

In STP cables, the wires are encased in a metallic shield. Although they are bulkier and more expensive than UTP, they are the ideal choice in areas with a lot of electromagnetic interference (like an industrial setting). They are available up to category 6a with maximum data speeds of 10 000Mbps and maximum bandwidth up to 500MHz.

Single-mode fibre is the ideal choice for long-distance transmissions (over 3000ft) and has a small light carrying core of between 8-10 microns.

Multimode fibre is the preferred option for medium to short-distance transmissions (under 3000ft) and has a larger light carrying core (62.5 microns or larger).

It’s crucial that your structured cabling systems be designed with the future in mind since cabling will likely outlast the majority of the technologies they currently use and support including computers, servers, and network switches. Overhauling your cabling down the road can come with high price tags and impair your organization’s ability to accommodate changing technologies and growth.
